An event for people in the Highlands and Islands
For as long as we can remember, there has been a regular complaint at munches that there are no events for the community in the highlands. That it is prohibitively expensive and time consuming to travel to the central belt or further afield in order to attend events. Also that there was very little by way of education and information exchange.
To change this, we need to put on an educational and fun event ourselves. First though, we needed to find somewhere to hold our event. One spring morning the founder was hiking near Loch Ness and unexpectedly came across a house with lots of bedrooms and space in a lovely setting. That was in 2013. We had happened upon our venue.
There followed a lot of brainstorming as a core group of enthusiasts birthed the first Highland House. A number of locals volunteered the organise catering and presentations.
We continued to use the original venue for years but as Highland House established a reputation, the venue began to feel too small. Finally the home owner started to convert a nearby steading into a holiday rental. So we decided we needed to move on. The first move was to a house south of Inverness. Nice though the house was it was not ideal. So the following year we moved again to the venue we use now. This was a much more comfortable house and more accessible too.
Highland House began as a small event in the Highlands and for Highlanders primarily. It was inexpensive, since we only ever charged enough to cover costs. The aim was to have a party at which the local community could meet and have fun together. There was also to be an information exchange and a chance to learn new things.
Highland house has moved venues and the organisers have changed. The original ethos though remains.
Highland House 2024 will take place on the first weekend of October (03/10/24-06/10/24). This years event will be held in the same venue as last year. The venue is a spacious countrydie manor with many rooms and many communal areas, located in a rural area of the Scottish Highlands.
